Sins Of Avarice #3: Bezos Is Getting $573 Million + $195 Million In Infrastructure Upgrades For Queens HQ

Image
The Amazon deal is no win for New Yorkers New York is offering vastly more than Virginia for its half of the new Amazon headquarters. What’s up with that? The city and state ponied up nearly $3 billion in grants, credits and so on over 25 years. Down south, Amazon is getting $573 million plus $195 million in infrastructure upgrades. Sure looks like Amazon’s Jeff Bezos just fleeced Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio as rubes. Columnist E.J. McMahon noted one possible explanation: New York had to pay more to cover Amazon’s added costs for using all-union construction workers. If that’s the deal — and the praise from building-trades honcho Gary LaBarbera suggests it is — then it’s the taxpayers who are getting fleeced. Source

New York City’s Infrastructure Is Crumbling. It Just Agreed To Help Amazon Build A Helipad. The city and state of New York have agreed to help Amazon build an onsite helipad as part of the agreement to build its new headquarters in Long Island City. Amazon released the agreement Tuesday, along with its announcement about the location of its new headquarters: one in New York and one in Arlington, Virginia. The state of Virginia has similarly agreed to help secure the company an onsite helipad. New York “agree[s] to assist in securing access to a helipad on the Development Sites, as part of the Development Plan and subject to FAA approval,” according to the agreement. If the helipad cannot be onsite, it will be built nearby. Source

Sin Of Avarice#1: BEZOS Rapes NY Taxpayers - Taxpayers To Pay $48,000 Per Job At New AMAZON HQ...

NY taxpayers to pay $48,000 per Amazon HQ job New York state is kicking in more than $1.5 billion in taxpayer-funded incentives for getting half of Amazon's second headquarters located in a section of Queens. The Seattle-based company made its long-awaited announcement Tuesday, saying Long Island City and Alexandria, Virginia, will each get 25,000 jobs. The online retailer also said it will open an operations hub in Nashville, creating 5,000 jobs. Amazon will also receive as-yet unspecified incentives from New York City. New York state's incentives are nearly triple those of Virginia's, while Tennessee's are $102 million. According to Amazon, the cost per job for New York taxpayers is $48,000, compared to $22,000 for Virginia and $13,000 for Tennessee. In a statement released by Amazon, Cuomo called the agreement "one of the largest, most competitive economic development investments in U.S. history." Source
